We source flowers as locally as possible. This Valentine's Day, over half of our blooms and botanicals are grown within 200 miles of Ithaca! In February? Indeed!
Pennsylvania-based Dillon Floral delivers local Lilies, Gerberas, Alstroemeria, Carnations, Calla Lilies, Tulips and Snapdragons three times a week. You can't beat that freshness!
Greenhouse grower Rosa Flora produces our Gerbera Daisies, Tulips, Alstroemeria and Snapdragons. Also from the Niagara region of Ontario Canada: spray Chrysanthemums.
Pussywillow, Red and Yellow Dogwood, Forsythia and Curly Willow come from farmers and gardeners in Tompkins County, January - April.
At Business is Blooming, we embrace sustainable business practices and are committed to continually "greening" our operations. Our flowers enhance your sustainable lifestyle.
Hyperlocal come Summer
- We order direct from the farm, or shop at the Ithaca Farmer's Market for the freshest flowers.
- Fewer miles flowers from farm to vase - just 10 miles on average. Most flowers sold by grocery stores & other florists have traveled 3,000 to 10,000 miles. Mucho carbon!
Certified suppliers and growers.
Like Fair Trade Chocolate and Coffee, we choose certified flowers whenever we can.
- Veriflora is a sustainability certification program for fresh cut flowers and potted plants in North and South America.
- Florverde ensures all flowers grown and harvested in Colombia meet specific social and environmental standards.
Compost Queens
- We compost all the cuttings from our design floor, and old bouquets from our Fresh Flower Service with the help of Cayuga Compost.
We reduce, re-use and recycle
- Less clutter Flowers are a renewable resource, and compostable - a beautiful and sustainable gift.
- Fewer miles. All three of us on the Bizbloom team are lucky enough to live in our Fall Creek neighborhood and walk to work!
- Less garbage. Flowers from local growers use only a simple rubber band to hold the bunch. We almost never use floral foam (aka "Oasis"), a petroleum-based product that must be landfilled after use. Instead we create design armatures from curly willow, bamboo and other natural elements.
- Vase Re-use. Our Fresh Flower Service vases are re-used, instead of piling up on office shelves or kitchen cupboards. Ask us about event vase rental. We also accept donations of used vases and give them to community organizations - filled with fresh flowers, of course!
- Recycling. We are a
ReBusiness Partner with Tompkins County Solid Waste & Recycling Center and recycle all our plastic film, cardboard, mixed paper, plastic, metal, and glass waste.
- We use recycled materials such as 100% recycled ReCreations fiber urns, Eco-formspots made from grain husks, and simple things like copy paper.
